When infield material migrates into the edge of the grass, a raised “lip” forms and poses a safety hazard to athletes. You can prevent an infield lip by following good maintenance practices. But if your infield already has a severe lip, you’ll want to use a sod cutter to remove it. Here’s how.

First, use the sod cutter to remove the turfgrass on the raised lip. Gently remove the grass so you can return it later.

Next, use a box blade or rake to remove the infield mix where the lip was.

Finally, return the turfgrass to the now-level edge of the infield. Water the area to help the grass reestablish.

Keep up with edging and proper maintenance to prevent another severe infield lip in the future.
